Day of Arrival in Bogotá - Transfer from Dorado International Airport (airport code BOG) to City Express Junior Hotel

This will be the day of your arrival in Colombia, you will be picked up at Dorado International Airport in Bogotá at 2:00 p.m., whatever your time of arrival, check in at the hotel will be after 3:00 p.m.; this day will be used to rest and adapt to the altitude of the city which is; 2,600 m.s.a.l. (8530 FT).

Day 1 Transfer to Leticia, on the Amazon River

Early in the morning we’ll return to Dorado International Airport for our flight to Leticia, Amazonas.

We will have breakfast at 6:00 a.m. and will check out of the City Express Junior Hotel, at 6:30 a.m. we will proceed to the airport by shuttle bus.

This will be the first day of our tour, and the day that we arrive in the city of Leticia, it is a Colombian municipality located in the Amazonas of Colombia, which is called the lungs of the world, for its great jungle extensions. It is the capital of the Amazonas state and is located at an altitude of approximately 100 m.a.s.l. (328. ft) The temperature in Leticia is about 27°C.

8:00-10:30 a.m. Flight to Leticia

When we arrive at Leticia Alfredo Vasquez Cobo International Airport (LET), we will transfer to Waira Suits Hotel by the hotels shuttle bus.

2:00 pm. Check into Waira Suits Hotel

After checking in, we will visit the Fantasy Island, located on the southern edge of Leticia, it is the gateway to the Amazon River. Depending on the time of the year, you cross fantasy island to the Amazon by small boat and other times of the year, you can cross the divide on foot, due to annual water level changes. On the way you can see floating houses built on the river, as well as photogenic people from the region, rowing their small dug-out boats. Around 3,000 people live on the fantasy island.

The people who inhabit this portion of the land, do not identify themselves as Peruvians, or Brazilians or Colombians, they are Amazonians; between observing the culture of the locals you can also appreciate bird species such as, Red and white Spinatail, White-winged Parakeet, Lesser Hornero, Spotted Tody Flycatcher, Yellow-browed Sparrow, Orange-back Troupial, Hooded Tanager, Plain-breasted Piculet; Varzea Thrush, Oriole Blackbird among others, then we will finish in the Santander Park, there you can see flocks of different bird species flying over the city, such as White-eyed Parakeet, Dusky-headed Parakeet, among others.

We will have dinner in Tierras Amazonicas restaurant at 7:00 p.m.

Day 2  The Kilometer 16 Road, to Bora Ethnicity- Maloka

On this day we will have breakfast at 6 o'clock and at 6:30 a.m. we will travel by bus to the sector that leads to the river, it will take forty minutes. In this area there is a different ecosystem and special birds can be found in very old trees, there will be a possibility to observe bird species such as; Yellow-browed Antbird, Yellow-billed Jacamar, Black-capped Antbird, with any luck, we may see the Pavonine Quetzal, when we arrive at the Maloka (the name that collectively describes the people and the place) for lunch at noon, the natives who live there  will receive us, their buildings were made by the natives and everything was made with natural materials, there we will have the opportunity to observe and discuss, their cultural costumes and nature ideals, in addition, they will give us their concept of the species that live there in an ethnic and ancestral sense,  as well as the uses and the meaning they give to tobacco and the coca plant. In the afternoon, 4 or 5 p.m. we will return to the hotel.

At 7:00 pm we will have dinner in the hotel's restaurant.

Day 3 Ceiba Hotel

On this day we will have breakfast at 6:00 am and then we will go by boat to La Ceiba, enjoying the animals and plants that are seen on the tour.

On the way to La Ceiba we will make a stop in a reserve, it will take fifty minutes, to arrive at the Victoria Regia reserve, this natural reserve allows you to admire the largest lotus in the Amazon Victoria Regia, from which the reserve is named, and born to delight you with its very fragrant smell. On our way, we will enter the virgin jungle, visit the Lake of Leaves- of the Victoria Regia and the garden of native species, witnessing an incredible gallery of insects, birds, butterflies and much more, it will be amazing to see the largest aquatic plant in the world, there in its natural habitat, perched on the water’s surface. Then we will continue by boat until we reach the Hotel, a further two hours on.

When we arrive at the hotel, we will secure our belongings and have lunch at noon, after which in the afternoon, we will explore the surroundings of the hotel observing the vegetation and wildlife, as well as lizards, frogs, plants as we interact with the local community.

After returning to the hotel and resting a little, we will have dinner at 7:00 p.m. After dinner, between 8 and 9 pm we will be able to do a night walk in search of Owls, Snakes, Tarantulas and poison arrow frogs.

Day 4 Mocagua Communities

We will have breakfast at 6:00 a.m. in the hotel's restaurant.

Then at 6:30 a.m. we will travel by boat to visit the community of Mocagua, and the species found in this area, this will take thirty minutes but, it may take a bit longer as we photograph, and bird watch various species along the way. The communities that live there have taken responsibility of conserving and preserving the natural treasures that inhabit there, and we will visit to the Amacayacu natural national park, there we can observe several species of birds such as; Sungrebe, Black-fronted Nunbird, Masked Tityra, Russet-backed Oropendola, Black-tailed Trogon, Solitary-black Cacique, Festive Parrot, Citron-bellied Attila, Gray-winged Trumpeter, White-throated Toucan; in addition to admiring the second largest tree in the world “Amazon Ceiba” which is 500 years old, it is also the sacred tree of the Ticuna ethnic group.

At 12:00 p.m. we will return to the hotel, where we’ll have lunch.

At 2:00 p.m. we will go to the Maikuchiga Foundation, we will have two options, go by boat and it will take thirty minutes or go walking taking photographs and bird watching and it will take two hours, a distance of a kilometer and a half.

The Maikuchiga Foundation was created in its origins as a rehabilitation center for primates seized from illegal trafficking or voluntarily surrendered, such as “churuco monkey” the most important species to rehabilitate and popularly known as the environmental engineers of the Amazon. The Woolly Monkey is on the red list of critically endangered species by the IUCN, due in large part to the destruction of its habitat, hunting, and the poaching for illegal pet trade.

At 7:00 p.m. we will have dinner in the hotel's restaurant.

Day 5 Isla Cacao & Tarapoto Lagoon

On this day we will have breakfast at 6:00 a.m. in the hotel's restaurant.

At 6:30 a.m. we will go by boat to Isla cacao, it will take fifty minutes along the beautiful Amazon River, along the way, we can see the beautiful Grey and the pink dolphins, and birds like Dark-breasted Spinetail, Great Potoo, Black and White Antbird, Wire-tailed Manakin.

At noon we will travel to Puerto Nariño by boat, this will take fifteen minutes and at 12:30 p.m. we'll have lunch in Las Margaritas restaurant.

In the afternoon, at 02:00 p.m. we’ll photograph birds around Tarapoto Lagoon, it will take us about two hours as we will stop at various points along the way to observe; Long-billed Woodcreeper, White-eared

Jacamar, Short-tailed Parrot, Scarlet Macaw, Scarlet-crowned Barbet, among others.

At the end of the afternoon, we will return to the hotel and relax and later we will have dinner in the hotel's restaurant.

Day 6 Return to Leticia

Breakfast at Waira Selva Hotel at 6:00 a.m.

At 6:30 a.m. we will return to Leticia by boat to catch our shuttle bus to the airport to make our flight in the airport of Leticia to get to Pereira at 11:00 a.m., the route from Puerto Nariño to Leticia is two hours.

Arriving at the International Airport Matecaña Pereira at 01:30 p.m

There we will take a bus to the restaurant to have lunch in el Secreto Español. Restaurant, which is located twenty minutes from the airport, after lunch we will go to the Termales del Ruiz hotel, located in the city of Manizales, an approximate tour of two and a half hours by shuttle bus.

We will arrive at magical Termales del Ruiz Hotel to check in at 6:00 p.m., after settling into our rooms, we will do a tour around the hotel grounds.

Day 7 Termales del Ruiz Hotel

This hotel is located just 30 minutes from the entrance of the Nevados’ National Natural Park, where we can photograph the much sought-after Buffy Helmetcrest and is located approximately 3,500 m.a.s.l. or 11482.ft, the hotel has viewpoints and feeders for some species of hummingbirds, and it is possible among its forests and paths to find other species of birds such as; Tanagers and Parrots. There you will spend most of the day observing and photographing birds.

At 6:00 am we will be at the hotel feeders photographing the birds until 08:30 a.m. at this time, we will have breakfast in the hotel restaurant.

At 10:00 am, we will go by bus to the entrance of the Nevados National Natural Park, this will take half an hour, there we will look for Buffy Helmetcrest, an endemic hummingbird that can only be observed in this part of the country, since its distribution is very limited, as well as some seedeaters that are found along the way, at noon we will return to the hotel to have lunch in the hotel restaurant at 01:00 p.m.

In the afternoon, at 3:00 p.m. we will continue looking for the different species that are found around the hotel until 6:00 p.m.

This hotel is famous for its hot water pools that come down from the volcano, where people can take a bath to soak and relax before dinner.

At 6:00 p.m. people can take a bath in the hot spring to relax before dinner.

At 07:30 p.m. we will have dinner in the hotel restaurant.

Day 8 Hacienda El Bosque Reserve

05:30 a.m. check out.

At 6:00 am we will have breakfast in the hotel's restaurant and then at 6:30 a.m. we will go to Hacienda El Bosque by shuttle bus. The tour will take an hour to arrive at one of the top places in Manizales for the photography of Antpittas, species that are difficult to find in the forest since they are very shy and can’t be seen, this place is perfectly adapted for your observation and photography. There will meet some of the star attractions fondly named; Lunita, a Crescent-face Antpitta, Armando, a Gray-browed Brush-Finch, Ambrosio, a Gray-breasted Mountain Toucan, as well as Barred Fruiteater, Hooded Mountain-Tanager, Masked Flower piercer, Mountain Velvet Breast, Golden-fronted Redstart, among others at this magical place, we will spend all morning here.

At 12:00 a.m. we will have lunch in the reserve restaurant. At 1:00 p.m. we will continue with our adventure in Hacienda El Bosque until 04:30 p.m. then, we will continue to Recinto del Pensamiento Hotel by bus, the route is about half an hour.

When we arrive at the reserve, we will check in at 05:20 p.m., then we will enjoy the afternoon spoils of the reserve and relax there.

At 7:00 p.m. we will have dinner.

Day 9 Bosque de La Pradera

Today is an early push off, at 05:30 am, we will leave the hotel by shuttle bus to go to a reserve called Bosque de la Pradera. It takes half an hour to get to this place. We will have breakfast in the reserve.

It’s a typical colonial coffee house, where you can see a varied ecosystem with butterflies, birds, and orchids. Among the most striking birds that can be found there, you can photograph White-capped Tanager, Slate-crowned Antpitta, Hooded Mountain Tanager, Black-billed Mountain Toucan, Bicolored Antpitta, Andea Guan, among others.

At 12:00 a.m. we will have lunch in Bosque de la Pradera restaurant and at 2:00 p.m. after which we return to photography and birding activity until 04:30 pm after which we will go to the hotel by bus, it takes half an hour.

At 07:30 p.m. we will have dinner in the hotel restaurant.

Day 10 Rio Blanco Reserve

At 05:30 a.m. We will have breakfast in the hotel’s restaurant.

At 6:00 a.m. we will visit the Rio Blanco Reserve and Quebrada Olivares is in the northeast of Caldas, the tour will take an hour and half by car. This place is in the mountainous area of the great Chinchiná River Basin of foggy forest, it is 4,932 hectares, at a height of 2,150 between 3,700 m.a.s.l (7053-12139 ft) and boasts 350 species of birds, this place has feeders for other Antpittas species, as well as hummingbird feeders. When we get there, we will start the tour around the reserve, and we will have lunch there at noon.

We will be there all day until 4:30 p.m. and we will return to hotel to rest.

At 7:00 p.m. we will have dinner at Estelar Reciento del Pensamiento hotel’s restaurant.

Possible species: Chestnut-crowned Antpitta, Bicolored Antpitta, Brown-banded Antpitta, Pearled Treerunner, Green-and-black Fruiteater, Blue-capped Tanager, Grass-green Tanager, Superciliaried Hemispingus, Mountain Wren, Yellow-vented Woodpecker, Rufous-crowned Tody-Flycatcher, Azara's Spinetail, among others.

Day 11 Embalse Cameguadua- Estelar Recinto del Pensamiento Hotel

This day we will leave for the Cameguadua reservoir after having breakfast at 05:30 a.m.,  this place is  located approximately  an hour from the hotel, this boardwalk has been characterized lately by having a diversity of birds and wildlife, there you can see and photograph birds such as Blue-winged Teal, Pied-billed Grebe, Smooth-billed Ani, Blackish Rail, Common Gallinule, Spectacled Parrotlet, Black Phoebe, Carib Grackle, Flame-rumped Tanager, Smoky-brown Woodpecker, Lineated Woodpecker, Blue-necked Tanager, Black-throated Mango, Thick-billed Euphonia, Blackish Raúl, Yellow bellied siskin, Oliver crowned yellowthroat, among others.

At noon, we’ll move to have lunch at Creps and Waffles restaurant and then we’ll return to the hotel to photograpgh birds there around the gardens.

At 02:00 p.m. we’ll arrive to the hotel, there we can observe butterflies and hummingbirds, in the afternoon we can go to the butterfly garden of the hotel and feeders that are there, such as Long tailed sylph, White-necked Jacobin, Crowned Woodnymph, Beryl-spangled Tanager, Western Emerald, Green-fronted Lancebill, among others.

At 07:00 p.m. we’ll have dinner in the hotel’s restaurant.

Day 12 Tinamu Birding Reserve – Transfer Anaime

Early in the morning, we will have breakfast in the hotel restaurant at 05:15 a.m. At 5:30 a.m. we will leave the hotel to visit the Tinamu Birding Reserve, the tour will take an hour by car.

We will initiate activity at 6:30 a.m. in Tinamu Birding reserve, this place of 15 hectares of dry forest at a height of 1225 meters above sea level (3690 ft), 380 species of birds have been reported in this wonderful place, as well as some mammals, butterflies, reptiles, plants, flowers and trees, it has many feeders adjacent to the main house and its paths, an ideal place in Manizales for photography and bird watching, it’s one of the most prominent points in Colombia for this hobby, we shall spend all day here, enjoying their many wonders of this magical place.

We will have lunch at 12:00 p.m. in the reserve restaurant.

At 02:00 a.m. we will leave for Anaime, Cajamarca, the transfer is approximately 150 km and four hours long by shuttle bus.

We will arrive at 6:00 p.m. in Urapanes del Bosque and after settle in the lodge, we will have dinner and then rest of the day.

Possible species: Little Tinamou, White-bearded Manakin, Colombian Chachalaca, Streak-headed Woodcreeper, Gray-headed Dove, Clay-colored Thrush, Squirrel Cuckoo, Gray-headed Tanager, Rufous-breasted Hermit, Bay-headed Tanager, Green Hermit, Green Honeycreeper, Stripe-throated Hermit, White-necked Jacobin, White-vented Plumeleteer, Black-throated Mango, Andean Motmot, Plain-brown Woodcreeper, Acorn Woodpecker, Moustached Puffbird, Red-crowned Woodpecker, Cocoa Woodcreeper, Blue-headed Parrot, Cinereous Becard, Spectacled Parrotlet, Green Kingfisher, Jet Antbird, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Bluelored Antbird, Ultramarine Grosbeak , among other.

Day 13 Anaime - Orquidiario

This day we’ll have breakfast at 05:30 a.m. then we’ll move to a farm where we’ll photograph the Yellow eared Parrot (E), species that was extinct in Ecuador and can now only be observed in Colombia, as well as other birds in the area, such as, Red billed Emerald (NE), White-capped Tanager, Tourmaline Sunangel, Purple-throated Woodstar,  Bronze winged Parrot, Bare crested Antshrike, Capped Conebill, Rufous naped Greenlet, Andean Emerald, Plumbeous-crowned Tyrannulet.

At 11:30 a.m. we’ll move to the restaurant to have lunch, Doña Antonia restaurant.

At 01:00 p.m.we will go by bus to the spectacular Orchids of Tolima Foundation or the so-called “Orquideario”, the route will take one and half hours, when getting there we’ll have lunch in its restaurant.

The Orquideario is a reserve that its name easily inferred, because it has varieties of orchid such as Catleya trianae, the national flower of Colombia, and many more species of fauna and flora, among the birds that could be observed are: White-bellied Woodstar, Crimson-backed Tanager, Sooty-headed Tyrannulet, Buff-rumped Warbler,  White-breasted Wood-Wren,  and many more of the 120 birds that have been registered in the reserve, we will be there until closing time 6:00 p.m. and then we will move to Iguaima Hotel by bus, it would take us half an hour.

At 6:30 p.m. we will check in the hotel, this place is in the Combeima Canyon, it is a special place, because it is surrounded by gardens and therefore many birds from neighbouring forests come to feed, from any point of the hotel, you can watch birds, especially hummingbirds like, Buff-tailed Coronet, Fawn-breasted Brilliant, Purple-throated Woodstar, White-necked Jacobin, Andean Motmot, Cattle Tyrant, Spot-breasted Woodpecker, Green Jay, Orange-crowned Oriole, Andean Emerald, Bare-faced Ibis.

At 7:30 p.m. we will have dinner in the hotel restaurant. We'll spend the night at Iguaima Hotel.

Day 14 Ukuku Rural Lodge-La Riviera

At 5:30 a.m. At 5:30 am we will travel by shuttle bus to the Combeima Canyon, located between 1400 and 4200 m.s.a.l. (4593 - 13779 ft) of the foothills of the Los Nevados National Natural Park, East of the cordillera central

side, you can appreciate narrow valleys in the banks and steep imposing slopes up to 90 degrees, exposing the great walls of sheer rock that make up the Canyon, presenting a wonderful landscape to tourists visiting the region, here more than 250 species of birds have been recorded, and it is a place of transit for Broad-winged Hawk, Swaison´s Hawk, Mississippi Kite, migrating to North America.

On this day we will visit two of the different places accessible to the canyon, we will begin in Ukuku Rural Lodge, there we will have breakfast, one of my favorite places on earth, the

route by bus will take fifteen minutes from the hotel and then we will walk thirty minutes to arrive at the lodge. We will continue taking pictures and bird watching at the lodge until 7:00 a.m.

At this time, we will look for several of the nearly 300 species of birds that the basin allows entry through several corridors, among them we could hopefully see Torrent Duck, Sickle-winged Guan, the representative birds of the municipality: the Tolima Dove & Tolima Blossomcrown, as well as Emerald Toucanet, Green Jays and more against the spectacular snow-capped mountain backdrop. Very special place!

At 11 am, we will have lunch at La Rivera, an agritourism farm, it takes thirty minutes walking and another thirty minutes by bus, at 12 p.m. we will arrive at the entry to the farm, and we will have to cross the beautiful canyon by cablecar.

At 2:30 p.m. we will return to the principal road to the Combeima Canyon, and we will look for some interesting species of the area, making a tour of a special site which the local government shutdown to create a reservation for the Spectacled Bears, vulnerable in Colombia. This place was commonly traversed by vehicles and is now closed off to vehicular traffic in keeping with the conservation efforts to protect this venerable species, therefore, the road is only open to pedestrians.

Possible species: Tolima Dove (E), Tolima Blossomcrown (E), Indigo-capped Hummingbird (E), Buff tailed Coronet, Fawn-breasted Brilliant, Andean Motmot,  Crimson-backed Tanager, Southern Emerald-Toucanet, Yellow-faced Grassquit, White-necked Jacobin, White-bellied Woodstar,  there is the possibility of finding the Torrent Duck, Cattle Tyrant,    on the way along the river, and among other species that reach the garden feeders.

At 5:00 p.m. we return to Iguaima hotel to relax and at 7:00 p.m. will have dinner in the hotel's restaurant.

Day 15 Jardin Botanico San Jorge - Qawana Birding

We will have breakfast at 6:00 a.m. in the hotel's restaurant and then we will check out of the hotel.

This day, we will be heading to the San Jorge Botanical Garden of Ibagué at 6:30 a.m., the route will take thirty minutes; at 7:00 a.m. we will arrive to the reserve, where, in addition to the beautiful birds, you can find different species of Flora, this place is located on the North-Western hills of the Ibague city, and is an area that has been enriched by a great variety of flora, which serves as food for the wildlife that thrive there also, an ideal place to closely observe many species of birds.

Possible species: Green Kingfisher, White-bearded Manakin, Barred Antshrike, Andean Emerald, Bare-faced Ibis, Colombian Chachalaca, Orange-billed Sparrow, Common Tody-

Flycatcher, Blue-black Grosbeak, Spot-breasted Woodpecker, Orange-chinned Parakeet, Crimson crested Woodcreeper, Green hermit, Black faced Dacnis among others.

At 11:30 a.m. we will go to Qawana Birding   reserve by bus, the route will be an hour, there we will have lunch at 01:00 p.m. then, we will observe some more birds and also take a delightful bath in the waterfall and do a workshop on cocoa processing, then, we can have a delicious cup of chocolate accompanied by delicious Almojabanas (a very delicious and very popular local type of cheese buns) surrounded by the birds that frequent the place constantly.

Possible species: Mustached Puffbird, Olivaceous Piculet, Yellow Olive Flycatcher, Slaty Spinetail, Blue necked Tanager, White vented Plumeleteer, Gray-headed Tanager among others.

At 5:30 p.m. we will go to Sonesta Hotel by bus, the route will be thirty minutes, there we will check in at 6:30 p.m.

At 7:30 p.m. we will have dinner in Salvador & Milagros restaurant located five minutes from the hotel.

Day 16 Parque Verde & Agua reserve - Bogotá

At 4:00 a.m. we will check out of the hotel and then at 4:30 a.m. we will go ahead to Parque Verde & Agua reserve by bus, a two-hour trip. We will have breakfast on the road to the reserve.

At Parque Verde y Agua Reserve, we can observe several birds species  of the eastern mountain range, it is a Natural Park dedicated to the conservation of the flora and fauna representative of the region, with a height of 2,000 to 2,600 m.s.a.l (6561- 8530 ft) at the

highest point, average temperature of 16 ° C, with an extension of 190 hectares, 90 of these as a natural reserve with virgin forests, 5 wetlands, 18 water sources, 2 country roads, nature trails, cacique waterfall, the magnificent “tree of windows” and viewpoint to Fusagasugá.

It has a great variety of wild plants. We will have lunch at 12:00 pm, we will have an awesome time at this place up until 3:00 p.m. towards the end of the day, we will travel to the city of Bogotá by bus, it will take approximately two hours, it depends on the vehicular traffic of the city.

Possible species: Green-fronted Lancebill, Bronzy Inca, Buff-tailed Coronet, Booted Racket-Tail, Red headed Barbet, Slate-throated Redstart, Blue-capped Tanager, Flame-faced Tanager, Rusty Flowerpieircer, Moustached Brushfinch, Fawn-breasted Tanager, among others.  After lunch we will continue the trip to Bogota.

At 5:00 or 6:00 p.m. we will check in at the hotel City Express Junior where we first stayed when we arrived, and we will have dinner in the hotel's restaurant at 07:00 p.m.

Day 17 Return home

Early in the morning you will have breakfast in the hotel restaurant.

We will assist you in organizing your happy journey back to your home at the front desk. A Hotel shuttle bus will take you to El Dorado International Airport at your scheduled flight time.
